Website security and backups, for the day it all goes sideways

No site can be made unhackable, and anyone promising that is selling a feeling. Our website security work makes yours hard to get into, quick to notice trouble and fast to restore, with off-site backups we test.

What is included

Hard to get into, quick to notice, fast to restore.

Four rules we hold every site to, because no honest studio can promise it will never be attacked.

  1. Each person and each integration gets the access its job needs, so a leaked editor login cannot install anything.

    How a build runs
  2. Backups are kept off the platform. On a regular schedule we restore one to a staging copy to prove the whole chain works.

    See the work
  3. Security fixes are applied on a schedule and logged, so the gap between a known hole and a closed one stays short.

    The proof we show
  4. A written plan names who is called, what is restored and what customers are told, long before anyone needs it.

    Questions people ask

The argument

A security plugin is a start. A security plan is the job.

How it runs

From first call to launch, minus the headaches.

You see the page plan before design starts, and the design before we build. So there are no nasty surprises at the end.

Week 1

Review

We look at how the site could be got into today: the accounts, the versions, anything exposed, and where the backups sit.

What we deliver

  • Account and role audit
  • Version and patch review
  • Exposure check
  • Backup location check
A business owner laughing during a video strategy call on his laptop, in a light-filled room with a window behind him

Weeks 1 to 2

Harden

Accounts are cut back to what each person needs, two-factor is switched on, and anything open that should not be is closed.

What we deliver

  • Least-privilege roles
  • Two-factor on every admin
  • Unused plugins and users removed
  • Security headers set
A crowd of people crossing a busy city street, shot from above with their movement blurred

Week 2

Back up

Backups are copied off the platform on a schedule. The first restore is done on purpose, to a staging copy, with the time written down.

What we deliver

  • Off-site backup schedule
  • Retention period agreed
  • First restore tested
  • Restore time recorded
Three colleagues around a table of laptops, one standing and gesturing at a screen while the other two look on

Week 2

Protect forms

Spam is filtered quietly on the server, so customers never meet a puzzle and your inbox stops filling with junk.

What we deliver

  • Hidden field and timing checks
  • Server-side rate limits
  • Submission logging
  • Spam report after a month
Blue and lime patch cables plugged into a rack panel and sweeping away in order

Ongoing

Plan and drill

A written incident plan says who does what if something goes wrong, and regular restore drills prove the plan still works.

What we deliver

  • Incident response plan
  • Contact and escalation list
  • Regular restore drills
  • Patch log and report

The long read

What security can promise, and what it cannot.

Anyone selling an unhackable website is selling a feeling. This is what we can do, and what we will never claim.

Nobody can promise you will never be hacked

New flaws are found in popular software every week, and some are used before anyone has a fix.

So we do not promise a site that cannot be broken into. We make an attack expensive, notice it quickly, and make recovery routine.

That is less exciting than a guarantee, and a great deal more useful.

Most break-ins start with a login, not a genius

The usual way in is dull. An old admin account nobody removed. A plugin months out of date. A password that was used somewhere else.

That is why most of the work is housekeeping. Fewer accounts, smaller permissions and two-factor on everything that can change the site. Patches go on a schedule.

A backup you have never restored is a hope

Backups fail quietly. The schedule stopped, the files are incomplete, the database was left out, or the copy sits on the same server that just went down.

The only proof is a restore. So we do one on purpose, to a staging copy, on a regular schedule, and write down how long it took.

When the bad day comes, it is a routine we have already rehearsed.

A rehearsed restore, step by step
Back online Still to restore

Illustrative: the shape of a rehearsed restore, not a measurement or a promise for your site. Your drill records your own time.

Form spam is a security problem too

A contact form that lets bots through fills your inbox, buries genuine enquiries and can be used to send junk in your name.

We stop it on the server with hidden checks, timing and rate limits. That means no puzzle for your customers and far less junk for you.

Uptime monitoring and maintenance sit beside this service. One tells you the moment the site fails; the other keeps it patched between reviews.

Ask us how long your site would take to restore.

Questions

What people ask about keeping a site safe.

What you need to know before we start a conversation.

Not answered here? Ask us directly

Can you guarantee our site will not be hacked?

No, and be wary of anyone who does. We make the site hard to get into, watch for trouble and keep tested backups. Recovery becomes a routine we have already rehearsed. Nobody can promise you will never be attacked, and we won't either.

How often are backups taken, and where are they kept?

Backups are automated on a schedule set for your site, and sites that take orders or bookings are backed up more often. They are copied off the hosting platform to separate storage, so a failed server cannot take the backups with it.

What happens if the site is compromised?

The incident plan runs. We take the site to a safe state, restore from the last clean backup and close the way in. Then we tell you in plain terms what happened and what changed.

Will our team have to change how they log in?

A little. Everyone gets their own account with the access their job needs, and two-factor is switched on for anyone who can change the site. Shared logins go.

How is this different from maintenance?

Maintenance keeps the site updated and working. Security keeps people out and gets you back quickly if they get in. Both share the patching, and many clients run both side by side.

What does it cost?

The review is a fixed price. Ongoing protection is a fixed monthly fee, quoted after the review, based on the platform and how much the site handles.

We handle health or personal information. Does that change things?

It raises the stakes. Enquiry data should be limited to what you need, sent securely and kept on the web server no longer than needed. We review exactly that for sites in regulated industries.
